Reading Reflection 1

Chapter one discussed the many benefits of introducing our future generations to focus on project based learning in the classroom. I learned many ways that student collaboration could greatly benefit their understanding and learning skills. From student based learning they will be able to take on their learned stills to other stages of their education. Our society as a whole can benefit from project based learning. PBL is transforming students into cooperative individuals that are able to share strategies to create great finished projects. The students will be able to better work together with others in their future job positions. There are infinite amount of advantages using the PBL for both the students and the teacher. Teachers are able to learn from their student’s teamwork. Every student is unique which makes it important for teachers to adapt to each different situation. PBL will transform teachers into students as well. Teachers will always be learning new ways to innovate learning in the classroom by seeing what works well. Although the students, teachers and our society will improve from PBL there could be some issues. Perhaps individuals could create a dependence on other students for their own success. Knowing where each student stands based on their cognitive development could be difficult. The teacher will have to find a way to assess their student so they can know which student isn’t succeeding. New technology high will generate children into empowering adults, while engaging and integrate learning with technology. With the use of technology rapidly transforming social bookmarking is becoming more prevalent. People all around the world are able to connect and learn through the Internet and other means of technology. Smart phones make it possible to get students interacting with others. Social bookmarking makes communication and collaboration, and therefore learning easier. With the use of PBL in the classroom we can help generate more cooperative, social, and confident adults.

Reading Reflection #1

Reading Reflection #1
  1. Discussion on what you need to keep in mind as you start the journey through Project-Based Learning (PBL).
  2. Discussion on the overall benefits of the PBL approach.
  3. Discussion on the benefits to students who participate in PBL.
  4. Discussion on the benefits to teachers who invest in PBL.
  5. Discussion on what issues need to be considered in PBL approach.
  6. Discussion on New Technology High as an example of New Technology Model.
  7. Discussion on the benefits of social bookmarking.
 1. When starting my journey through Project-Based Learning I have to keep in mind that this is not the typical teaching style used and the role of both the student and the teacher change. There are many benefits that come from the PBL approach. Instead of the teacher leading the students the students take on their own search for their very own questions. This allows for students to work as a team, adapt to change, enhances problem solving skills. Teachers also benefit by being able to create an environment and prepare students to thrive in a constantly changing society. Some issues that need to be considered in the PBL approach are that most teachers are not familiar with this new approach and are still learning how to properly intertwine this teaching style into the one that they currently take on. New Technology High was designed to help students prepare for the digital aspect of the work field and society. The whole curriculum was designed according to PBL. The is an example in how which students can be taught using PBL and be very successful in life. Social bookmarking will allow people to share information they have found online that may be helpful to those who are teaching or learning the same material. Tags can be created using key words to make what you are looking for even easier.

Reading Reflection 1 (Week 2)

As you start the journey through Project-Based Learning (PBL), it is necessary to keep an open mind. Many teachers are hesitant about starting the journey because it is not something that they have had experience with while they were in school. Some important things to keep in mind and some benefits of this approach are that your students will be able to handle the challenge, the projects are worth all of the effort you put into making them happen, and that they allow students to learn in a way that is similar to their everyday life.

Students will benefit from this approach because they will actually remember what they learned throughout the day. At the end of the project, they will have created something that they can be proud of and that they feel like actually matters. This is the same reason that teachers will benefit from this approach as well, because when teachers put in the effort to making this PBL approach happen, the students will be invested in their own learning.

An issue that teachers will face when starting this approach is the realization that this is an investment. It requires a ton of work with planning everything that goes into a project. As they say in the book, "project design is front-loaded work" (p. 28). You will put in all of your effort into making a project meaningful and setting the stage for your students to take over, but then you have to wait and let your students learn through the project. Many teachers will face the issue of giving up control and learning to be patient with this approach, but it will pay off in the end.

Another aspect of PBL is technology. New Tech schools have a firm belief that technology is necessary in PBL and that it can captivate students by allowing them to use something that will relate to their everyday lives.

Lastly, social bookmarking can be a benefit to you because it helps you to understand what you find online. You can join PBL groups where you can give and receive ideas to use for projects in your own classroom.
